Record-breaking attendance for Lux Helsinki

Light Pipes brought light to Senate Square.

The ninth edition of the Lux Helsinki light festival was able to create a unique atmosphere in the centre of Helsinki for the second year in a row. From 5 to 9 January 2017, the route through the Kauppatori and Kruununhaka area attracted a record-breaking number of people with its light art. Over half a million people attended the festival. Lux Helsinki is organised by the City of Helsinki, and the event is free of charge. Have a look at the official festival video.

In 2017, the festival’s main objectives included improving the visitor experience and retaining the artistic and production values achieved in the previous years.

”Lux Helsinki stands out from other city events due to its large attendance, with visitors of all ages. Lux Helsinki is, above all, a social outdoor event where people get to know our beloved capital through light art. People come to the event together with family and friends, and they are left with positive memories of the event,” says Ilkka Paloniemi, Programme Curator of the Lux Helsinki festival.

Granlund participated in Lux Helsinki for the first time this year. We want to create well-being in the built environment, and Lux supports this idea. As an event partner, Granlund brought Light Pipes, an artistic work designed by Risanpää & Laine, to Senate Square. The glowing work brought warmth to Senate Square, and visitors were able to create their own light art by adjusting the lighting through 12 valves.

Lux Helsinki is part of the City of Helsinki’s programme for the centenary of Finland’s independence, and it was built together with many partners in the spirit of the centenary. The Lux Helsinki light festival is organised by the City of Helsinki. This year, the event’s main partner was Stora Enso. Other partners were IKEA Finland, Marimekko, Bright, Shader and Sun Effects. The event was sponsored by MTK, Plan International Finland, Granlund Oy, City, Bassoradio, Linnanmäki and Tori Quarters.

The next Lux Helsinki festival will be held in early January 2018.
