Medisiina D to be built on Kupittaa campus in Turku

Granlund involved as a HVAC and sprinkler designer as well as energy and BREEAM consultant

The University of Turku, the Hospital District of Southwest Finland, Turku University of Applied Sciences and the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) will in a few years’ time have new teaching, research and diagnostics facilities within the Kupittaa campus area in Turku. The property developer of the Medisiina D facility will be University Properties of Finland Ltd. The gross area of the building will be 26,470 m2. The construction work is tentatively scheduled to begin in August 2015 and is expected to be completed during the summer of 2018.

Medisiina D will be used by the University of Turku, the Hospital District of Southwest Finland, Turku University of Applied Sciences and the National Institute for Health and Welfare. The aim of the City of Turku is to develop the Kupittaa area into an attractive and sought-after innovative environment for companies and other organizations such as education and research institutions. The Medisiina D building will meet these needs well by bringing different organizations under one roof.

Granlund is responsible for the project’s HVAC and sprinkler design, energy consultancy and BREEAM environmental assessment coordination. “Demanding laboratory facilities will take over one third of the building, which is a major challenge for the designers,” says Jukka Tyni, Director of Granlund’s HVAC Department. Granlund has previously designed similar facilities for Chemicum, the home of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Helsinki, which is currently undergoing a major renovation.

The aim of the project is to create versatile and flexible facilities in order to support the joint activities of the users and to ensure that common services can be organized and that the facilities are used efficiently and economically. In addition, the facility solutions as well as the choice of structures and materials will follow the principles of sustainable development, as the goal is to find solutions to achieve low operating costs. The project will apply for the BREEAM Bespoke certificate and the target rating defined during the project planning stage is “Very Good”.

Medisiina D and the new T3 hospital will be built between the T and A hospital buildings, forming a compact and practical campus within the Turku University Hospital area. Medisiina D will be at the heart of the hospital operations, creating new possibilities for education, research and diagnostics collaboration.
