An expert consortium, Tiernaryhmä, has been selected to plan the first stage, the planning of the preparation stage of the Children and Women’s Hospital, of the renewal programme of the Oulu University Hospital (OUH). Granlund Kuopio Oy and Granlund Tampere Oy are responsible for building services and fixed medical equipment design.
The renewal of the hospital aims at savings in facility costs through making the use of the facilities more rational. The aim is to fit the operations in increasingly compact premises by increasing the rate of use and improving their use through good design. The new facilities will also be more energy efficient than the current ones, so savings will also be achieved in maintenance costs.
However, above all, the hospital renewal will focus on the development of operational processes. This means that the significance of the initial design stages is emphasised, since that is when the most important decisions on the operations are made and simultaneously the majority of the operational costs of the hospital’s life cycle will be determined.
The project implementation follows alliance principles
The project adapts the principles of integrated project delivery, or alliance, where risks are shared among the parties to the project and the designers work as a uniform group to attain common goals.
“The Hospital of the Future programme has acquired an expert group in hospital design and construction to be at the disposal of the client, which possesses the best prerequisites and talent to implement the design stages related to new construction and renovation for the renewal programme as a whole, as well as to implement sub-projects in accordance with goals and requirements set,” says Kari-Pekka Tampio, programme director in a Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District press release.
“From the perspective of building services design, it is interesting that we can participate in discussing the goals of the project with other users. This allows us to take into account the needs of the users in the design of building services in an entirely new way and to genuinely affect the whole project from the beginning,” says Jukka Vasara, the CEO of Granlund Kuopio Oy.

Hospital of the future 2030
Hospital of the Future is a renewal programme launched in 2012, which aims to reform the operations of the hospitals in the Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District and to build and renovate properties to meet modern requirements and future challenges. Approximately 500 million euros will be invested in the Hospital of the Future in the coming decades.
The maximum value of the design commission for the Children and Women’s Hospital preparation stage is 1.8 million euros. The decision about the future location of the hospital will be made in summer 2015 and the building decision in December 2015. It is estimated that the construction work will start during 2016. The cost estimate of the Children and Women’s Hospital is 70–80 million euros.
