Telia Helsinki Datacenter in construction

Telia Finland Oyj is currently building the largest data center in Finland. Granlund Oy provides MEP design to the project together with Royal HaskoningDVH from the Netherlands.

Telia Finland Oyj is currently building the largest open data center in Finland. The new center, Telia Helsinki Datacenter, will offer a multitude of businesses, including colocation functionality and cloud services. Previous data centers in Finland have focused exclusively on in-house business. The data center is scheduled to open spring 2018.

Granlund Oy, in conjunction with Royal HaskoningDVH, is responsible for the mechanical and electrical (MEP) design of the project. The co-operation in MEP design ensures international and local competence and skills. Designs for the site will comply with both national and international demands and requirements.

– This is an exciting project for us since the site combines the use of renewable energy and high technology, tells Jari Innanen, department director of Mission Critical in Granlund Oy.

No prior benchmark in Finland

At 33,500 square meters, the new data center will be the largest in Finland. It will house up to 200,000 servers with a maximum of 5,000 racks. As a whole, the IT power for the data center will be 24 megawatts of power input, of which 6MW will be online. Expanding the data center modularity will further increase the capacity for business growth and development.

Preliminary construction work has proven challenging; the time-consuming nature of the excavation may impact the project timeline. The bedrock in Finland is one of the toughest in the world.

Meticulous detail has been taken into consideration in the project design, however the design and construction are largely being developed in tandem with respect for time restrictions. With the assistance of BIM technology, minimal revisions and overlaps are ensured.

Sustainability

Sustainability is being integrated at the core of the construction site. Telia Finland Oy is targeting to achieve LEED certification; the project’s design reflects values of sustainability and the use of renewable natural resources. The construction and design follows LEED guidelines for procedures and documentation.

By generating 200,000 MWh of energy per year the new data center will have the capacity to heat around 20,000 flats. Telia Finland Oy has long-term partnerships with the heating provider and energy companies, hence ensuring the sustainable recycling and reuse of energy.

– The Energy Reuse Factor (ERF) makes the project remarkable, expresses Innanen.

The energy consumption of the building will be catered with heat pumps and it will be reused in the local district heating network.
