New Kesko Shopping Centre Focused on Energy Efficiency

Granlund in charge of building services

Granlund is responsible for implementing the building services for Kesko’s new Itäkeskus shopping centre. Energy efficiency is a major part of the plans.

The first phase will be the construction of a new K-Citymarket, along with restaurants and coffee shops. The second phase will see the shopping centre expand on the site of the current Citymarket. The project has now entered the planning phase, with the first phase scheduled to be complete by the end of 2017. The project has a building permit for a total of 26,000 m2 and an investment value of EUR 100 million. As a whole, the shopping centre is a multi-year project worth hundreds of millions of euros.

”Granlund will plan the use of HVAC, sprinkler and refrigeration technologies. Energy efficiency will be a special consideration when it comes to the recovery of the store’s cold condensate and the planning of necessary building service systems”, says Mika Reinikainen, Granlund’s director for project development and competition projects.

The new shopping centre will be easy to get to, as the City of Helsinki is building a new road connection off Itäväylä via the Marjaniementie roundabout. Kesko’s area plan also makes it possible to build 8,400 m2 of apartments.
