The second phase selections for the designers of the Länsimetro have been made and the contracts were signed on 22 December 2014. Granlund will continue as the HVAC designer together with Ramboll and in addition, Granlund was selected as the building automation and electrical designer as a consultancy group (Nissinen Niemistö Granlund). The contracts include the second phase stations, metro depot and tunnels.
Granlund has already been responsible for HVAC and fire protection design during the first phase of the project. “During the first phase we have paid particular attention to, for example, demanding smoke exhaust solutions and the safety of people. We will now be able to utilize the main principles during the second phase,” says Paavo Tikkanen, head of the HVAC department at Granlund.
Safety is also an important part of electrical design. “The Länsimetro is a challenging project in terms of electrical design. There will be a large number of electrical and safety systems and very strict safety requirements,” says Matti Urjo, head of Granlund’s electrical department.
Building services play an integral role in the Länsimetro design process as they ensure good indoor conditions with the highest possible level of energy efficiency and help provide a safe exit from deep underground in case of fire or other emergency. The solutions include exceptionally long ventilation ducts, smoke exhaust and supply air systems controlled with a frequency converter as well as over-pressurization blowers for the escape routes. Energy efficiency is ensured, for example, through heat recovery and appropriate ventilation control. The standby generators will be cooled using the water from the groundwater pool.
The Länsimetro will be built in two phases. The first phase includes the first eight stations and a 14 km track from Ruoholahti to Matinkylä. The second phase, in other words the track from Matinkylä to Kivenlahti, will be seven kilometers long with the following stations: Finnoo, Kaitaa, Soukka, Espoonlahti and Kivenlahti as well as the Sammalvuori underground depot. The Länsimetro will be built entirely underground.
The construction of the first phase of the Länsimetro will be completed by the end of 2015 and operations will begin in the autumn of 2016. The metro line from Matinkylä to Kivenlahti will be completed in 2020.
Once complete, the Länsimetro will be used by some 170,000 passengers every day.
