The Kuopio University Hospital (KUH) New Heart modernisation project is to be designed by the SYKE group. The New Heart project includes the complete renovation of the inpatient ward tower at the Puijo hospital, and the construction of a new tower hospital of nine floors in 2018-2024. The cost of the project is estimated to be at EUR 164 million, and the project covers a gross area of 60,000 square metres. The design team was chosen by the Kuopio University Hospital District Municipal Federation on Monday 12 June 2017.
The project will be carried out as an alliance. In the SYKE group, Granlund Kuopio Oy will act as the building service designer, A-Insinöörit Suunnittelu Oy will be responsible for structural design, and A-Insinöörit Rakennuttaminen Oy will lead the design group. Architectural and main design will be carried out by Arkkitehdit Kontukoski Oy, Arkkitehtistudio Kujala & Kolehmainen Oy and Rakennussuunnittelutoimisto Turunen & Räisänen Ky.
The goal of the New Heart project is to create a hospital that is adaptable to the changes during the life cycle and serves its users’ needs as efficiently as possible. “The patient’s perspective is especially highlighted in the modernisation project. The design is made from a functional perspective, which means that the needs of the patients and the personnel are the primary focus,” says Jukka Vasara, CEO of Granlund Kuopio Oy . For example, the inpatient wards of the hospital will be constructed using a new type of modular structure, in which the personnel will work close to the patients. The mobile solutions of the working stations and the new technology will, in turn, facilitate the work process.
The inpatient wards to be renovated in the Puijo hospital were built in the 1950’s. A hospital building in the area, built in 1985, will be demolished during the project.
