Energy Insight 2014

Granlund shares first place in an energy competition

The best ideas aiming at energy efficiency and energy savings were rewarded on 28 October at the EnergyInsight competition (EnergiaOivallus) which was held as part of the Energy 2014 fairs (8200 visitors) in Tampere. Granlund Oy’s optimization tool designed for construction projects shared the first place with Jorma Marttila’s Viljakas solar dryer.

Granlund’s winning entry is a new optimization tool for the examination of alternatives in a construction project. The tool makes it possible to effectively calculate, compare and visualize different variables affecting a construction project, including the effects of energy efficient construction solutions on indoor air quality. Buildings account for a large proportion of energy use in Finland and during the design stage several decisions are made that have an impact on the level of energy consumption. The new tool enables the preparation of between 100-1000 alternatives in a couple of hours, including different combinations, which makes the comparison of different solutions more efficient. According to the jury, the tool makes it possible to find more and more energy efficient solutions that are also, for example, better with regard to indoor air quality.

The optimization tool has been developed in EU funded ISES and locally funded RYM PRE Model Nova projects. Granlund tool is part of the ISES Virtual Energy Lab (VEL) demonstrated 15 November at a workshop during the Int. Conference EinB2014 in Athens. Granlund’s HVAC designer Tapani Idman (picture, 3rd from left) has also explored the theme in his master’s thesis entitled “Parametrization of energy simulation and development of energy-efficient building design, analysis and decision making process”. The optimization tool has been developed at Granlund by Tuomas Laine, Ville Kukkonen, Antti Karola, Eino Kukkonen and Francisco Forns-Samso (picture).

The biennial Energy Insight competition is open to companies, private individuals and groups and it was now held for the third time. The competition was organized by Expomark Oy and the Finnish Energy Council. The jury consisted of Professor Pekka Pirilä, Director Pertti Salminen (Finnish Energy Industries), Chief Policy Adviser Mikael Ohlström (Confederation of Finnish Industries EK) and Secretary General Lauri Muranen (Finnish Energy Council). This year over 30 individuals and companies took part in the competition. According to the jury, the two entries stood out from the rest and they both received a prize of 5,000 euros.
